Recipe for Real Dutch Pea Soup (Snert)

For 3-4 people
  • 250 g split peas
  • 1 1/4 litre water
  • 150 g shoulder chops (ham bone)
  • 100 g streaky bacon
  • 1 onion, chopped,
  • 1 leek, sliced
  • 100 g each celery and carrot, chopped
  • 1 potato, peeled
  • 1 smoked sausage
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon celery leaf


  • Wash the peas. Bring peas, pork and bacon softy to a boil.
  • Scoop off the foam.
  • While covered, simmer until peas are tender and fall apart, 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • In the meantime, slice and chop the vegetables.
  • Remove the pork from the soup when the pears are cooked, remove the bone, and cut meat into pieces.
  • Add the vegetables, smoked sausage and pork.
  • Simmer for 30 minutes more, stirring occasionally so bottom doesn't burn.
  • Remove smoked sausage and bacon. Chop and return to soup.
  • Add salt and pepper and celery leaf.
